The Brief
Having inherited the existing conservatory with the property the client felt it was very dated, not comfortable to use all year round due to the build quality, and limited in space not allowing it to fully integrate with the open plan kitchen/family room behind. Secondary to these issues was the garden layout, which although professionally landscaped by the previous owners was dominated by a raised fish pond resulting in this area not being used to entertain or socialise effectively. Our proposed solution was a very contemporary open living space deliberately designed to contrast with the property by using anthracite coloured frames set against a premium finish of monocouche render available in a range of textures and colours to the walls for a virtually no maintenance durable finish. To compliment the appearance of the Orangery we modified the design of the existing landscaping, removing the fish pond and laying vitreous paving tiles in a contemporary style & pattern. The combination of the new larger living space with access to the garden via bi-fold doors on two sides, and the changes to the landscaping has transformed the way the family are now able to use the full potential that the property has to offer.
The Design
Our aim as always is to offer to customise any building rather than adopt a one size fits all approach so each project has its own unique features where possible. In this case a bold contemporary style was to be achieved, which is reflected in the fascia detail of clean lines without any visible guttering. A system of aluminium fascia was specified and tailored to the exact requirements of our design finished in a powder coated paint finish to ensure durability & colour fastness to match the bi-fold doors. The roof was constructed by our skilled carpenters to form inset concealed channels to collect the rainwater taking the down pipe discreetly through the overhang avoiding any unsightly guttering.
Benfleet
Our customers concern about adding an extension was not the building design as much as the challenges that this site posed with its elevated position and how to cope with the drop in ground levels which only increased the further out you went. The existing garden was in need of an overhaul being over grown with trees & shrubs encroaching onto the patio area, which was not a useable leisure space. Our proposal set out to resolve these concerns by creating a new open living space, but equally important design a practical transition from the extension to the garden beyond, and an inviting leisure area. The most cost effective construct to achieve this transition was to offer a complex deck design with contemporary glass balustrades to deal with the site contours. What would have been a straight forward design exercise became a protracted negotiation with the local planning authority who required several redesigns to get to a solution that satisfied the customer, the planners, and the technical requirements dictated by the site. All decking over 300mm above natural ground level requires a planning application. In addition, we cleared the entire rear garden, put in some structural terracing, levelled the ground, and laid it to lawn leaving a blank canvass for the customer to develop in the future. This order was won based on our ability as a company to design, manage, and deliver a complete project including navigating any associated obstacles such as planning successfully.

The Design
Our aim as always is to offer to customise any building rather than adopt a one size fits all approach so each project has its own unique features where possible. In this case the fascia detail was designed as a feature combining an architectural GRP cornice moulding with an Ogee PVCu guttering system to form flowing lines but making a bold statement to contrast the simple contemporary style of the building. Although the balustrading was a practical requirement our use of stainless steel & glass takes the finished project to another level visually by complementing the modern feel of the project but softening the timber structure & decking below.

Crays Hill
In order to lose two walls, we employed a structural steel portal frame pivotal to the design objectives required by the client. This allowed for a pair of aluminium bi-fold doors to seamlessly close onto a single corner post. With the traditionally styled fascia detail & roof lantern the Orangery annexe stands in perfect harmony with the bungalow mirroring eaves height and roof lines.
Langdon Hills
Creating a second lounge and dining area whilst also expand the restricted kitchen and making it open plan. The project was fully landscaped to accommodate the repositioned hot tub, and a new home office.
Grays
The new double doors to the rear creating the perfect outdoor entertainment & leisure space, naturally flowing between the kitchen and dining room. The installation of a set of bespoke Oak doors to maintain the room separation but keep inline with the original build.
